Bohemains vs UCD, Dalymount Park, 10th September
Footage is here Bohs V UCD
In a thrilling game a professional performance from Bohs secured 3 goals and 3 points against the Students. The game started off with Bohs fans still believing they can win the league with news filtering through of St.Pats early goal VS Shamrock Rovers. By the end of the game we still believe but we were still 7 points behind Rovers after some goal poaching from Gary Twigg and shocking defending from Pats gave Rovers the 3 points!
Bohs could have had a penalty as early as 30 seconds into this match when Killian Brennan was sent tumbling inside the area referee Antoney Buttimer waved away the appeals. All credit must go to UCD for coming to Dalymount and not "parking the bus" which so many teams do but in truth this helped Bohs to carve open their defence on numerous occasions.
Chris O`Connor made a good save from a Brian Shorthall header but it was the home side who had the rest of the chances for the remainder of the half. First Jason Byrne should have scored when he found himself in front of goal after McGlynn scuffed his shot. Jason McGuiness thought he had given Bohs the lead after he tapped home a cross but it was ruled for a reason that still no one apart from Buttimer knows!
But then, finally, Bohs struck. McGlynn, running the show in midfield was the provider. A swift counter-attack, indebted to Brennan’s cute flick on the halfway line, set McGlynn away and he found Byrne with a perfectly weighted through-ball. Byrne still had some work to do however, powering through and smashing the ball beyond Billy Brennan.
It was two nil shortly afterwards as Bohs exerted total dominance on the game. UCD were caught dallying in their half, not for the first time. Owen Heary and Mark Quigley repeatedly tried to get a sight at goal in the box before McGlynn finally put his foot through it to send Bohs in two up at the break.
UCD started the second half well, winning a lot of corners, but Bohs almost scored a third before the hour mark. Counter-attacking with ease, Cretaro found Brennan free on the right hand side of the area. Brennan crossed to the back post where Byrne rose highest – but his header was tipped onto the post.
UCD, somehow, found themselves just one behind with twenty minutes to go when Paul Corry fired in from the edge of the area. One of their many corners – of which there were double-figures in the second half – was played short from Keith Moore to Chris Mulhall. He rolled in the onrushing Corry to fire it in.
But a few minutes later Mark Quigly restored Bohs` 2 goal lead after some great tackling from Madden he sent Quigly through down the left, he turned the defender inside out and shot low into the bottom corner. An extremly sublime goal from the ever-improving ex-Millwall man.
Bohs controlled the rest of the game and will take many positives from this game. Next up is Drogheda at Dalymount on Monday night!!!!!!
