Match Thoughts

Bohemians against Drogheda United
Dundalk against Shamrock Rovers
Galway United against Sligo Rovers
Sporting Fingal against Bray Wanderers
U.C.D against St.Patrick’s Athletic .

Bohemians 2-0 Drogheda United :
Now, this one was always looking to be a good match and that it was , but when Bohemians started off brightly it looked as if it was going to be a walkover but as soon as Drogheda got into the game it livened up ! The goals came from veteran striker Jason Byrne and Killian Brennan helped Bohs move into a close title challenge with near rivals Shamrock Rovers, now a few weeks ago people began writing off Bohemian’s chances of a three in a row league title but now after the UEFA Champions League humiliation they have got back to on form football and winning games and have put them selves firmly back in with a shout of winning the league! Up next for Bohemians is Sligo Rovers on Saturday the 25th of September , while for Drogheda United they pit their wits against a Sporting Fingal side who are chasing a Europa League Spot, so that is a good game !!

Dundalk 5-1 Shamrock Rovers:
Now this game was a shock of many tonight but this made the headlines as the Lilywhites thrashed rivals Shamrock Rovers by 5 goals to 1 , Nobody expected this to happen , even Dundalk Manager didn’t expect this , as for Michael O’Neill and his side will wish this is only a one time thing and that it doesn’t effect their recent form , which has been brilliant as they won the last 17 games before Tuesday , and it proved to be a horror return to Oriel Park for Shamrock Rovers and Neale Fenn as he got a lot of abuse which was expected , and the goals came from the new number 10 called Matthew Tipton who bagged a hatrick for Dundalk and Tom Miller scored one when he opened the scoring within three minutes , and then probably man of the match Dean Bennet who played really well in the middle of the park fired home and with Dundalk going into half time 4-0 up and surely game over ! This was a very disappointing result for Shamrock Rovers but it gave Dundalk a relegation lift, so lets see how Dundalk continue when they play 3rd place St.Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park on Friday and Shamrock Rovers play host to Galway United on Friday also .

Galway United 2-2 Sligo Rovers:
This one was a game for Ireland Under 21 player Karl Sheppard to help Galway fight back and get a draw against Sligo Rovers, and under 36 minutes Galway where 2 nil down as in the eight minute Riche Ryan fired in to make it 1-0 to Sligo and then the second goal for Rovers came courtesy of John Russell on the 36 minute this was looking to easy for Sligo, but then Galway showed a sign of things to come when Gary Curran had a shot go in after it sneaked over the line, just about said the Galway United fans but they where pleased, and then came the best time for Galway fans as Karl Sheppard scored from a Stephen O’Donnell free-kick and then the comeback was complete , both sides pushed for a winner in the last few minutes but that goal on the 63rd minute was the last goal these fans at TerryLand Park where going to see !! So the game ended all square with the scores at 2-2 and next up for Galway is a trip to Tallaght Stadium and Sligo will be against title challengers Bohemians at the Showgrounds!! This draw was a boost for Galway as their looking to escape the drama of relegation while this is a set back for Rovers as they are currently in the chase for a Europa League Spot.

Sporting Fingal 2-2 Bray Wanderers:
This game was an expectant win for Sporting Fingal fans but this was the latest team to be handed a reality check and showed you should never take teams for granted and ever since Eddie Gormley left , Bray have hit top form after coming off the bottom of the league since the start !! this is a real moral boost for them , surely ? But , it was not the best of starts for Bray as they where 1-0 down inside two minutes as Alan Kirby put fingal ahead with a fine effort ! this came followed by a tactic switch form the Bray Manager who clearly wanted the three points here tonight at the Morton Stadium, but then the switch payed off as on-form striker Jake Kelly fired in two goals and gave the travelling support something to be happy about come the half-time whistle as Bray led by 2 goals to 1 , after Kelly scoring on the 16th minute and again on 34 minutes as he drilled the ball past Darren Quigley , but then Fingal drew level as Conon Byrne went 1 on 1 with Gregg and only the post could stop him from scoring but then Eamon Zayed fired in the rebound who was in the right place at the right time for Fingal Fans , this turned out to be the last goal of the game and this means that Bray leap over Drogheda into 9th place in the 2010 Airtricty league table and survival is well underway , up next for them is a home game vs U.C.D while Fingal play away to Drogheda !

U.C.D 3-2 St.Patrick’s Athletic:
This was the last shock that happened in the Airtricty premier divison , as the students fired three goals past a off-form Saints side , as the travelling support where delighted to see Danny North score a cracking goal from at least 28 yards which gave Keeper Billy Brennan no chance in the U.C.D net ! But this turned out to have no say and what the score was come the final whistle , as the students fought back , as a 25 yard shot by Moore was fired at keeper Gary Rogers , but he took the chance to score from the second attempt after the shot was parried so that brought the score back to all square , and then U.C.D went in front after striker David McMillian scored his first goal after making his comeback from injury , when he picked up the injury last june !!, so that made it all better for him , but Saints fans where not best pleased with the display Saints where putting on , and it got worse when Referee Riche Winter pointed to the penalty spot after he assumed that left-back Ian Bermingham had brought down striker Ciaran Kilduff on 70 minutes and from the resulting penalty Greg Bolger fired it in to make the scores at 3-1 to the Students , and all looking more and more like game over and maybe the title challenge from St.Pats over ? They did however manage to grab a consolation when new striker Sean Stewart fired home from close range on added time , so that was the last goal of the game and it finished 3-2 to U.C.D and this game possibly marks the end of a title challenge by St.Patrick’s Athletic , who play host to Dundalk in the next league game , while the Students play away to Bray Wanderers!!
Thanks for reading folks and wish your team the best of luck this weekend , as i remind you it is Cup Weekend , but that doesn’t mean we wont have match reports and match previews ! Thanks and goodbye for now!! Alex.
