Mark McGoldrick Interview

Mark Sligo won a unique treble this year of both Senior Cups and European qualification what did you think of it all?

Yeah it was great to be a part of it I suppose! Only really was involved mid way through the season but was still nice to be a part of it especially being a local lad from Sligo

You played a lot with the lower level Sligo teams and even won a cup yourself there how was that?

Yeah We won the U-18 Connaught Cup beating Mervue in the final which was great! First time Sligo rovers have won that cup in a while so that was nice to do! Played alot with Reserves and U-20s as well last year before progressing into first team!

Represented Ireland as well what an honour that must have been?

Yeah got a call up to the Irish colleges’ team there last month! I was delighted! Played a friendly match against Drogheda which we drew 1-1! Next competitive game is this Tuesday actually! Great honour to be called up for that I suppose ya.

And do you plan on staying at the show grounds this year?

Yeah. Going out on loan was an option to try and get regular first team football. Although it looks like now I’ll stay and try to get as many games as possible here with Rovers! The squad being so strong makes it difficult though.

And this question is from a fan (Who would like to remain anonymous)
How did it feel to score your first senior goal at The Showgrounds ?

Yeah it was great feeling! Nothing better than scoring for you're home club and the team you have supported. It was especially nice that it was in the Showgrounds as well! Made it that little bit better!

Now looking towards this season are you hoping to add more to that tally?

That is the plan anyways! As a striker you're job is to score goals! Hopefully if I get a bit more game time I can score a few more. Alot of games this year with us challenging in all competitions so hopefully I will get the chance to add a few more
Are more Ireland call-ups on the cards maybe at a higher level even?

Not sure at the moment! Just want to concentrate with Rovers now and the Irish college’s team! Would be great if it happens! Up to myself really to take my chance when I get it and then see what happens from there! That would be the aim though yeah.

Who was the best player you played with last year?

Probably would have been Richie Ryan! Like in fairness there is so many you could pick from Rovers team last year, but if ya have to choose one it would definitely be him!

Back to something you said earlier about going on loan which clubs were interested?

It only ever really was speculation, Galway and Finn Harps... At the end of the day only one team I want to play for though and that’s Rovers!

Be honest at the start of last season did you think they (Sligo) could win that much stuff?

At the start probably not because there was alot of new signings brought in and it did take a while for the team to gel together! It took a few games at the start of the season to really get going and that was probably the reason why we didn’t win the league in the end. When we started playing well we were the best footballing team in the country unfortunately Shams just pipped us to the league but it was nice to win the other two cups which we probably deserved I think.

Who do you think will be up there this year?

Shams are strong again this year and have a made some very good signings so you would have to say them! I can definitely see ourselves up there challenging also! Dundalk seem to have a good side as well but its hard to call.. Bohs despite their problems at the minute will always be up there along with Pats! Hopefully we end the season on top.

Okay and we're almost out of time so our last question is what was your favourite game ever played?

My favourite game I ever played would probably be the fai cup quarter final against Monaghan, although I was only on the pitch for 5 minutes but that was the game I scored my first goal for Rovers.
