News Round-up!

This is Tuesday,15/02/2011 News Round-up. Enjoy reading!

We start with the Setanta results and the games played were UCD vs Lisburn Distillery at Dalymount Park and Linfield vs Dundalk at Windsor Park.

Billy Brennan in action for Former Club UCD
UCD vs Lisburn Distillery 0-0
This is a game were UCD make a lot of chances to place the new signings and with Dean Marshall starting up midfield but slowly moved up to the front of the line, We expected some goals. In the Lisburn net was Former UCD man Billy Brennan who has made a quiet impressive start to his career move up the North of Ireland! The game started better for UCD's point of view with Graham Rusk's header pushed over the bar from Brennan. However, Lisburn started to get back into the game and grow in confidence and 41-year old striker Glenn Ferguson went close on the UCD goal. For the rest of the half Billy Brennan was kept busy when he dived down low to save from UCD's Robbie Creevy, Paul O'Connor , Dean Marshall and Graham Rusk who were all keeping Brennan busy. Both O'Connor and Rusk had their shots blocked by a solid defense. Half time whistle blew at Dalymount and the score was level at 0-0.

Lisburn started the second half brightly when Gary Thompson went close with a save from UCD's shot-stopper Ger Barron, they game brightened up and O'Connor forced yet another save from Brennan and Darren Meenan left it go for a corner, then Ferguson forced a double save from Barron and he kept the scores level at 0-0!! A winner was looking more and more likely for either team. Both side's created a lot of chances towards the end but nothing came from them and the scores finished level at the final whistle! A happy return for Billy Brennan as he kept a clean sheet along with his counterpart Ger Barron! Return leg is Monday the 28th of February.

Linfield vs Dundalk FC: 3-5!!
Daniel Kearns with match ball. Thanks to Dundalkfc.com
This was a more trilling game than the other Setanta match on that night and the game started off slow but got going in the end while on the thirty minute mark Daniel Kearns scored his first of the night, and there was plenty!, following a good counter attack from the Lilywhites! However, Linfield pulled one back through Thompson's penalty on the stroke of half time and the sides went in at halftime 1-1. But in the second half Mark Quigley put Dundalk back in front after a Ross Gaynor cross. But more drama as Linfield pulled back again and scored a rebound of yet another penalty. Kearns then added his second of the game when he combined with Mark Quigley to make it 3-2 to Dundalk, was that the end of the scoring? Turned out it wasn't! Quigley made it 4-2 to Dundalk when he let a ball bounce in front of him and hammered it in for the visitors. Allen of Linfield made it interesting when he made the scores back to 4-3 and in the dying moments of the game Daniel Kearns got his hat-rick and made the scores 5-3 and thats the way it finished. The return leg will be played on Monday the 28th of February.

Despite Refereee Winters two second-half red cards this was an uneventful pre-season workout for the Hoops. Shamrock Rovers 0-0 Monaghan United
Dan Murray
Ryan Thompson started in goal for Rovers but it was his Jamaican colleague Akeem Priestly that drew an early save from Mons 'keeper Sava after a counter attack. Dean Kelly stretched to meet Anto Murphy's cross on 8 mins but couldn't direct the ball on target. Foley blasted a shot just wide for the visitors before Turner went on a good run into the Mons area but couldn't find a Rovers player with his cross. On 13 mins the visitors almost scored when Reilly crossed for Barrett to stoop low to head the ball wide of Thompsons goal from six-yards out.On 19 mins Karl Sheppard tried to get on the end of Murphys cross in front of goal but he was unable to make proper contact. On 28 mins two good crosses in succession by Reilly needed clearances by Murray and Thompson. The visitors again threatened on 31 mins but Brennans shot was blocked by fellow Mons player Reilly in front of goal.Kellys shot on 33 mins was deflected for a corner which Murray rose to meet but Sheppard couldn't help his header on target. Just before the break Kellys free-kick was blocked by the wall and the ball fell to McCormack on the right and he forced a decent save from Sava. The second-half was only three mins old when Kelly saw a straight Red card for a tackle on Foley, who had to be stretchered off. The game failed to move out of second gear as Monaghan were unable to take advantage of the extra man. On 69 mins a nice through ball from Priestly forced Sava to race out of his area to head clear from Sheppard. Rovers best chance of the half came when Stevens deep cross was met by Sheppard at the back post but his header hit the cross-bar. Turner fired a shot just wide as the game petered out but with two mins remaining Connor McCormack took Priestly's ball in the area and he caught a defender as he stretched to make contact with the ball. Ref. Winters adjudged this to be a straight red card and Rovers finished the game with nine men.
